3 Tips For Moving Home Stress-Free

Blog

Most people don't enjoy moving house. It can be a physically and emotionally exhausting time, and a change of home often coincides with other changes in your life too, such as a new job or new community. However, it doesn't have to be stressful if you commit to looking after yourself during the move period. Here are three tips for moving home stress-free:

Embrace Minimalism

Moving tends to mean late nights of carefully packing all the stuff you don't actually need or use. Tiredness breaks down your emotional resilience, so why sit and label boxes of things that aren't adding anything positive to your life? Get radical and ruthless and commit to only taking what you actually use. Get rid of the DVDs you might watch one Christmas years from now or the ornaments that looked nice in the store but have no sentimental value or purpose. Decluttering means less work for you at the other end of the process, as you'll have less to unpack. You may also find it freeing and liberating, as clutter in the home has been linked to poor mental health. Look at moving as a new start, and rather than feeling stressed, you may look forward to packing.

Don't Pack Too Early

Living out of boxes and not being able to find anything is a sure-fire way to feel stressed. It's inevitable you'll end up needing something you were sure it was safe to pack, and packing too early will make the move feel like it's taking much longer than it actually is. There's also the risk you'll dread going home after work, as a house full of bags and boxes doesn't exactly create a relaxing environment. However, going out to socialise after work often means a later night than normal, which will only leave you feeling tired and struggling to get essential tasks done on time. Packing can be done in a few days, so keep your home feeling homely until the week before you move.

Call In The Professionals

There are many reasons people want to handle the physical moving of their possessions themselves, but when you're not used to lifting heavy items every day, moving the contents of even a small family home can take an amateur all day. A professional removal company can have your possessions moved in just a couple of hours, leaving you free to prepare yourself a healthy meal or just take your time getting unpacked and settled for the night. You won't have to worry about driving a van or fitting everything into the van to prevent the need for more than one trip. So, even if you want to transport a few of your prized possessions yourself, trust a removal company to do their job and save yourself unnecessary work.

These are just a few suggestions for taking the stress out of moving house. When you know you're about to enter a period of change and disruption, take some time to think about what you can do to look after yourself in a healthy and positive way.

Moving on a budget

Moving can be really expensive! But I move regularly for one reason or another, and I've become pretty good at moving on a budget. I can always find a cheap removalist and get some great deals on packing supplies. I also have some good tips on smart packing to reduce the amount of boxes that you need to move, which can help to minimise the costs as well. People are always impressed with my budgeting mojo, so I thought it would be good to start a blog to share my tips as well as create a place for others to share their ideas on moving on a budget.
